The incident was reported around 7 p.m. Friday to Greenwich police after the seller called to report the theft, said Lt. John Slusarz.
The test-driver, described as being a white Brazilian male in his 30's, with his 7-year-old daughter took the black 2004 Jeep Cherokee for a test drive, and never returned, Slusarz said.
The victim told police he met the man at the Citgo gas station in Cos Cob.
Police said the man, who was speaking Portuguese with the child, told the owner he wanted to test drive the vehicle before paying the $1,500 being asked for the Jeep.
The owner did not ask for a driver's license of any form of identification before letting the man test drive the vehicle.
